The mountain of Montserrat hides more than 100 caves inside, but the one we call Les Coves de Montserrat (also known as the Salnitre), is located in Collbató, and is the only one that allows a 400 meter long underground walk enjoying of tourist conditioning.
Collbató is a millenary nucleus that dates back to the time when these lands were the border area of the Catalan counties. Its privileged location has marked the town’s character, at the foot of Montserrat, on top of a pass where two roads met: the Barcelona rural road and the old Vallès road; the two roads joined at the current Plaça de l’Església. A confluence of factors that made Collbató a town of farmers and porters, who were responsible for transporting people and goods to the monastery of Montserrat.
